When you look at the storage breakdown on your mobile device, chances are good that your photos take up a bulk of space on your hard drive. It can be especially frustrating if you have a 16GB or 32GB phone or tablet, but the latest Google Photos update could help you free up storage space without forcing you to move data off of your device.

On Tuesday morning, Google’s John Elstone announced on his Google+ page that a new ‘ Free Up Space’ button has been added to the Settings menu of the Google Photos app on Android. When you click ‘Free Up Space,’ you’ll be prompted to delete all the copies of photos and videos that have already been backed up by the app.
The update also gives users of certain SD-card enabled devices the ability to delete photos stored on an SD card. This means you won’t see a photo in the Photos view after it’s already been deleted.
Additionally, Google is rolling out a web-based feature for Google Photos which will allow users to downgrade photos uploaded in “Original quality” down to “High quality” from their browsers. In order to do this, just visit photos.google.com/settings from your computer and click on ‘Recover Storage.’
