How to delete or save every old voicemail By Mark Jones

Is the voicemail box on your smartphone full of old messages? These messages are downloaded locally to your phone when you listen to them and they can take up valuable storage space.
It might seem like an inconsequential amount of space, but every bit counts. With this in mind, I'll show you how to delete voicemails from your smartphone, both one at a time and multiples at once.

Deleting voicemails from an Android phone

With an Android phone, you can delete voicemails both individually or a few at the same time. Here are the steps to delete them:
  • Open the Voicemail menu
  • Press More in the upper-right corner

  • Press Edit

  • Boxes will appear to the left on each voicemail
  • Select each voicemail that you want to delete. You can choose one or multiple

  • You will see a check mark in each box next to each voicemail you choose to delete
  • Press Delete

Once you delete a voicemail on Android it's permanently gone from your phone and is no longer using storage space. If you backed up your Android in a cloud service the voicemails could be found there, but still are not using space on your phone.

Deleting voicemails from an iPhone

Deleting voicemails on your iPhone is easy. Here are the steps:

Delete voicemails one at a time

  • Open the Phone app
  • Tap the Voicemail tab
  • Swipe left across the voicemail that you want to delete
  • Tap the red Delete button and it will be moved to the Deleted Messages folder

When you delete voicemails they are moved to the Deleted Messages folder where you are able to recover them later if you'd like. Here are the steps to delete them permanently to free up some space.
  • Open the Phone app
  • Tap the Voicemail tab
  • Tap the Deleted Messages folder
  • Tap Clear All in the top-right corner; a pop-up window will appear asking you to confirm that you would like to delete all voicemails
  • Tap Clear All to confirm

Delete multiple voicemails at once

Here are the steps to delete multiple voicemails from your iPhone at once:
  • Open the Phone app
  • Tap the Voicemail tab
  • Tap Edit in the upper-right corner
  • Select each voicemail that you want to delete. You will see a check mark to the left on each selected voicemail
  • Tap Delete on the bottom-right corner
All of these voicemails will be moved to the Deleted Messages folder. To delete them permanently and free up space, follow the steps above.

Bonus tip: How to save voicemails from an iPhone

If you want to free up space on your iPhone by deleting voicemails but want to save them for later, you can save them to iTunes on your PC or Mac.

Saving voicemails from an iPhone

If you want to save voicemails to a PC you will need iExplorer. You can click here to download it for free. Once you have it follow these steps:
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Open iExplorer
  • Click on the Data tab in the Device Overview screen
  • Click on the Voicemail button
  • You will be asked if you want to create an iTunes backup if you have not done so on this computer; select Yes
  • If you've already created a backup in iTunes on this computer, iExplorer will ask if you'd like to Use Last Backup or Refresh to create a new one; select Refresh
  • Once iExplorer finishes loading your Voicemail, you will see a list of contacts and phone numbers
  • Select any of the names or numbers in the list to preview the voicemail
  • To Export the selected voicemail, click the Export Selected Voicemail button, or you can Export All
  • The voicemails you export are now saved in iTunes on your computer and can be accessed at any time
